For those who don’t know, Epic Games actually signed on as a publisher for Remedy Entertainment back in 2020 and promised full creative freedom to the developer, but there must have been some conflicts with remaking Max Payne under Epic as Rockstar was the original publisher and likely did not want to hand away the rights. This comes as part of a new agreement signed between the two companies. We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions. We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games. Rockstar will also be funding the game and Remedy says the budget will be “in line with a typical Remedy AAA-game production”. Same will be the case here with Rockstar publishing the Max Payne remakes and Remedy handling the actual development. Remedy and Rockstar have had a great working relation in the past as the company has published all Max Payne games to date and even helped with development. Max Payne 1 and Max Payne 2: Fall of Max Payne are being remade by Remedy in collaboration with Rockstar Games, the original publisher of both of those. Remedy promises that the game will receive the same AAA-game treatment that other Remedy games enjoy, putting worries to rest that the Max Payne remakes will have the same fate as the GTA Trilogy Remasters.In a surprise announcement today that caught everyone off-guard, Remedy Entertainment, creators of the Max Payne franchise, have revealed that they’re remaking the original two Max Payne games for next-gen hardware. Meanwhile, Remedy’s CEO Tero Virtala says “Max Payne has always held a special place in the hearts of everyone at Remedy, and we know millions of fans worldwide feel the same.” He continues, “We’re hugely excited to be working with our partners at Rockstar Games once again for the chance to bring the story, action and atmosphere of the original Max Payne games back to players in new ways.” We are massive fans of the work the Remedy team has created over the years, and we can’t wait to play these new versions.” Rockstar Founder Sam Houser says about this announcement: “We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games. The game’s story was told in a neo-noir style comic series, with the story unfolding like a comic book. The game follows the titular antihero police detective turned vigilante Max Payne who goes on a quest for vengeance after his family became collateral damage in the war of drugs in New York. Max Payne popularized the “bullet time” gameplay mechanic that later on became a staple in cover shooter games to come.

Max Payne was a third-person shooter game for PC and later on PS2 and Xbox. The third Max Payne was then developed and published by Rockstar when the IP was acquired by Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company. Lest people forget, the first two Max Payne games were originally developed by Remedy Entertainment.
According to Remedy’s announcement, the games will be released as standalone titles and will be made using Remedy’s in-house Northlight game engine, the same one used to create Control and Quantum Break. Both games will eventually be published by Rockstar Games. With this deal, the development of Max Payne Remake and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne Remake were both confirmed.
Remedy Entertainment announced on Wednesday that the development studio has just reached a publishing deal with Rockstar Games. We are pleased to announce that we will remake the iconic Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, in a new development agreement with Rockstar Games.
Max Payne Remake and Max Payne 2 Remake will both be coming by way of Rockstar Games and Remedy Entertainment.
